Guilde du Livre by Jean Picart Le Doux

The Book Guild – A Book for Everyone, created in 1948 by the Swiss artist Jean Picart Le Doux.

This elegant design was produced for La Guilde du Livre, a Swiss publishing cooperative founded in Lausanne in 1936 to make quality books accessible to a wide public. Picart Le Doux’s artwork features a stylised, golden figure inspired by classical geometry and proportion, curled within a circular frame – a visual nod to the Vitruvian Man and the harmony of art, knowledge, and human form. Rendered in deep burgundy and green tones with refined gold outlines, the poster embodies postwar European ideals of cultural enlightenment and design sophistication. It’s widely admired for its symbolic balance and timeless aesthetic, blending art, literature, and humanism.
