Swiss Trade Fair

This poster was designed in 1947 by the Swiss artist Albert Chavaz to promote the Schweizer Mustermesse Basel (Swiss Trade Fair) held in Basel from 12-22 April 1947.

The fair was one of Switzerland’s most important commercial exhibitions, showcasing industry, design and technological innovation in the years following World War II. Chavaz’s expressive composition depicts a crouching athletic figure rendered with bold brushstrokes and vivid colours, reflecting the influence of modernist painting and conveying themes of strength, renewal and progress. The skyline of Basel and stylised fair structures appear in the background, linking the dynamic human figure with the city hosting the event. The poster is a strong example of post-war Swiss graphic design, where fine art sensibilities and commercial poster design often overlapped.
