ENAL: Enzo Spinelli

This Italian poster was designed by artist Enzo Spinelli for Ente Nazionale Assistenza Lavoratori (E.N.A.L), an organisation that promoted cultural and recreational opportunities for workers in post-war Italy.

The text '1963 – Anno del tempo libero' ('Year of Leisure Time') encourages Italians to make greater use of their free time through activities highlighted around the kite: 'più arte' (more art), 'più cultura' (more culture), 'più sport' (more sport), and 'più turismo' (more tourism). The playful kite soaring across a bright blue sky symbolises freedom, leisure and optimism, reflecting the social changes of Italy’s economic boom when increasing prosperity allowed workers more opportunities for travel, sport and cultural pursuits.
