Lucien Métivet, a Montmartre artist trained under Fernand Cormon, became a prolific illustrator for Parisian satirical magazines like Le Rire and L'Assiette au Beurre. Active in the Montmartre art scene, he decorated cabarets and captured café-concert culture. Here, he portrays chanteuse Eugénie Buffet as an impoverished working-class girl, walking down a snowy Parisian street. Her dark hair and dress contrast with the scene, while her name appears on a poster beside her, and "every night" is written in the snow – a clever nod to her performances.
