Percival Trompf (1902–1964)

One of Australia's most celebrated poster artists, renowned for his vibrant travel posters and iconic depictions of the Australian landscape. Working during the golden age of tourism advertising, Trompf created some of the country's most recognisable promotional imagery, helping shape Australia's visual identity both at home and abroad.

Based in Melbourne, Trompf produced posters for government tourism bodies, railway companies and commercial clients, capturing destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, Mount Buffalo, Sydney Harbour and the Australian Alps. Characterised by bold colours, dramatic compositions and a distinctive Art Deco influence, his work encouraged generations of travellers to explore Australia's natural beauty and cultural landmarks.

Trompf's posters received international recognition, earning honours from the Royal Society of Arts in London and winning the Ideal Label Contest in 1934. In 1938, he further enhanced his reputation with a commission for the Canadian Pacific Railway, demonstrating the global appeal of his work.

Today, original Percy Trompf posters are highly sought after by collectors and are regarded as some of the finest examples of Australian graphic design and travel advertising. His images remain enduring symbols of Australia's golden age of tourism and poster art.
