Boris Bućan

Boris Bućan

Boris Bućan (1947–2023)

One of Croatia's most influential graphic designers and artists, renowned for his bold, large-scale posters and distinctive visual language. Born in Zagreb, he studied at the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts before graduating in 1972 with a degree in painting.

Emerging during the New Art Practice movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, Bućan combined painting, graphic design, photography and emerging visual technologies to create striking works that transformed public spaces. His vibrant posters for theatre, ballet, music and cultural institutions became iconic throughout Croatia and beyond, earning international recognition and exhibition at events including the Venice Biennale.

Alongside his celebrated poster work, Bućan explored the relationship between art, media and consumer culture. His influential series Bućan Art 1972 reimagined familiar corporate logos through an artistic lens, reflecting on the growing presence of global brands while questioning the boundaries between commerce and art. Today, his posters are regarded as some of the most important and collectable examples of late 20th-century European graphic design.
